Opening Office files starts non-stop Norton anti-virus scan

I have run Norton's Live Update, and all Microsoft XP and Office updates, but
my computer locks up when trying to open an existing Office file (Word or
Excel). I tried restoring to an earlier point when things were OK, and then
ran updates, but it still locks up.

Norton Anti-virus options, Misc. Clear the check for Office Plug-in. IMO,
if you have Norton Auto Protect running in background, you do not need this
option for home use.

BTW, Windows XP System Restore only restores system files not application or
data files.
