Opening PPT files from web-server

Hi,

When we open a PPT file located on our intranet server
(address: http://xxx/yyy.ppt), the file is opened in
presentation mode.
When a copy of the same file located on C:, the file is
opened in Edit mode, as expected.

Can anyone explain this difference? Is it possible to open
a read-only copy of the first file in Edit mode?
