Hello,

Apologies first if this question has been posted already. I browsed the topics but couldn't find anything similar to my problem.

I saved a .docx file to my ftp site and recently downloaded it. I think the original .docx document was (undesirably) converted into a .xml file (this is suspicion, more than knowledge on my behalf). The result is that I cannot open the document and am uncertain how to convert it back to the original .docx file or whether it isn't now corrupted.

Any insight is appreciated.

A .docx file IS an XML file.

Chances are, what has happened is that something has "Unzipped" it. If
that's the case, it's pretty much unrecoverable.

If you have File editing tools on your Mac, what you can do is Unzip the
..docx.

Create a new .docx (with one word in it...)

Unzip and open that.

Now: Copy the folders you find in the old file into the new file,
overwriting the ones that are there.

Make sure that you remove any resource fork files that may have gotten in:
Mac Word cannot open a file containing an internal resource fork.

Close and re-zip it, then change the extension back to .docx.

The new document should then open up and present you with the text from the
old one.

The other thing you can do is hope that the "damage" happened on the way
back out. Make sure your FTP program is set to transfer the file as
"binary", not "ASCII". Because it's a Sip file, you cannot transfer as
ASCI, you must use binary mode.

Hope this helps
