outlook 2000 inbox

The inbox continues to show 8 new messages when there are
none. When the new messages do come in the number
increases, but when the mail is opened only the new
messages that are opened are decreased, going back to 8
new messages.

Any ideas?

Try opening an old message and see if the count decreases.
