Outlook 2001 and Exchange 2000 connection problem (suddenly)

J

Jeff Daniels

We have an E2k Exchange 2000 email server that serves 500 Windows boxes
and 3 Macs (OS 9.1 with Outlook 2001).

The email with the Macs has worked fine for 2 years. All of the sudden
it does not.

Microsoft states on their web site that Outlook 2001 works with Exchange
servers however our IT department says Exchange does not support Outlook
2001. (Then why was Outlook 2001 even created?)

Anyway, IT says the Exchange server only works with: Outlook 2000 SP3
Win32 (Windows only?).

How do we fix this? Did IT do something to the Exchange server?

Thanks.

Hi jeff!

Your IT department is misinformed and apparently Windows-centric.
Outlook 2001 was made to work only with Exchange via the MAPI protocol,
which your Windows Outlook clients must still be using.

If all of your Macs have been working and then they all suddenly fail
then, yes, your Exchange server has changed or possibly some network
settings have changed and your Macs are no longer pointing to the
correct server for mail.

Do you use a Hosts file on your Macs to point them to the correct
server? If so, verify that the IP address is still correct. Your server
administrator can provide this to you (or if you know how to ping using
a Windows machine, you can ping the email server's name and you'll
receive the IP address this way).

If you don't use Hosts files then your DNS servers may be misconfigured
and not pointing your Macs to the correct server.

Hope this helps! bill

Hello Bill,

Yes, I have a Hosts file in my Preferences folder. So I just replace
the IP address in the Hosts file with the email server's IP address?

Thanks.

If it's different from the Exchange server's IP address, then yes;
replace it. And be sure to reboot to make your new settings take effect.

Good luck! bill

Hosts file: changing the settings did not work.

The IT department still insists that we get Outlook 2000 Mac and it will
work.

Can the IT department contact you regarding this?

Hi Jeff!

If you'll refer your contact to this group, he may find the answers he
needs by searching in past messages or he can post questions here and
I'll be sure to look for them. I'm limited in what I can respond to
personally.

By the way, there is no Outlook 2000 for Mac. Outlook 2001 is the latest
and last version available for Mac and should meet your needs. So long
as you have the TCP/IP Control Panel pointing to the Hosts file and the
Hosts file contains the Exchange server's IP address and a name, which
you will use in Outlook, then you should be set.
