OUTLOOK 2002- email problem

I get the message "operation failed" whenever I try to "send/receive
messages".
When I just create a message I send it OK.
As a result I cannot receive any email.

What's wrong?

The problem showed up when I decided to go back from Outlook 2003 trial
version to my old Outllok xp
