outlook 2007 recovery

David

i have a backup of all my files from my computer. I had to do a full system
restore.
after reinstalling office 2007, is there a way to move the folders from my
backup hard drive, to the newly recovered and reinstalled office program.

I never exported my calendar or address book folders. I am hoping to get
back the addresses, and if possible the emails that were saved on the
computer.

Thanks
David

Just restore your backed-up PST file(s) to a location of your choice,
then open it with Outlook. Do not use export or import.

They are in the same file - the pst file contains ALL your Outlook data.

Hi Pat...
I have seen the comment not to use "export or import" on several posts
throughout this group now...Unforturnately before this group I never
knew about this warning and have used "import and export" (and had
problems that I had to clean up). I would like to understand WHY we
should NOT use a feature that is in Outlook that appears to be an
appropriate way to move files to someone that has not seen this
group. Also, what is the purpose of the "import and export" feature
then if we are NOT to use it to move file?

Thank you in advance for you time,
Cindy

The import/export function is basically designed to import and export
data to and from non-Outlook apps, such as Excel, Access etc etc.
If you think about it, you don't need to import Word documents to a new
version of Word, do you?

Gordon gave the correct explanation. Unfortunately there are even some
"official" Microsoft documents that actually recommend the use of
import/export to and from PST files. The reason why import/export should
not be used in connection with PST files is that various information get
lost during the process. Using simple copy or move (drag-and-drop) will
preserve all information related to the copied items.

Thanks for the explaination Gordon and Pat. Microsoft should have
some sort of warning then when chosing the import or export function
and chosing the pst option...they have popup warnings for every thing
else...they should have a popup warning that appears when someone
chooses the pst option that warns them not to use that method between
Outlooks and to use it only when moving to and from a different
Microsoft app. And then ASK...are you sure you want to continue
"Cancel" or "OK". It should also tell the user to drag/drop or copy
and paste in Explorer as a way to move pst files between Outlook
apps. I bet 90 % or greater of home users have no idea not to use the
import/export function on their pst files when moving between
computers.

It seems to me that there's quite a lot of incorrect or out of date info
on the MS sites - their XP site STILL says you can run it with 128 MB
RAM!!!!!!! (Well you CAN, but would you like to try it?)

Computers shouldn't be nannies. Your car doesn't warn you about every
little thing. The car manufacturer expects that if you're interested in
knowing how cars work, that you'll do your own research and read about them,
both within the owner's manual and on the Internet. Why should software
vendors need to provide over-the-top hand-holding?

Hi Brian,

Well Microsoft seems to have a pop up box for everything else I try to
do, asking me if I am sure I want to "continue". And I have used
computers/Outlook for years and never ran across this, in anything I
have read, before this forum (and I do spend a lot of time reading and
doing research on the web).

And since normal logic would assume that Import/Export would be there
to move the files (since that is what the words Import/Export implies)
that it would be OKAY to use it to move the files.

And since it would PREVENT a lot of problems for people who think they
are using the proper procedure to move the files simply because the
choice is there to use it, it would save a lot of unnecessary calls
for help to the forums. It would be good customer service to clarify
this when a person choses this option in Outlook. What's one more pop
up? Or better yet, I would be happy to get rid of many of the other
popups of "are you sure you want to continue" boxes.

So I respectfully disagree on this ... I do not think helping the
average computer user from chosing Import/Export in this situation is
being a nanny since the combination of the ability to import/export
files, and allowing one of those file types to be pst files, is not
worth the time or the PR.
