outlook address doubles after changes?

When I add info to an address contact it makes a new entry in my "address
book"... one has a type "smtp" and the other has type "fax". They both have
a phone number and fax number in the fields. I clicked save/close after
adding the info. Why does it give me another (new) contact instead of just
saving the original one with the changes? Renee (outlook 2002)

Because those are different methods to contact that specific contact.
Multiple entries must exists otherwise you cannot specify a different way of
contacting that person. There will still be only a single entry in the
Contact folder.

If you do not want to display the fax numbers in the Address Book you can
invalidate the fax numbers by putting a letter in front of the fax number
such as "F" or simply "Fax".

If you want to do that for your entire Contact folder, this addin might be
interesting to you;
