outlook and vpn authentication issues

I have noticed that Outlook 2000 (sp3) sometimes (from laptop to laptop) has
problems authenticating via a VPN connection when it is installed on Windows
2000 Pro laptops. However, when connecting on a Windows XP Home or Pro
laptop it never has a problem with authentication (despite the laptop not
being a member of the domain or having a DC as a logonserver).

Why would Outlook request a userid, password and domain on a Windows 2000
laptop but not on the XP ones, all settings being equal? I have done some
research on this and some have advised checking the logonserver by using the
"set" command (according to them if the logonserver was the local machine
name authentication would not work) but it does on the XP machines!

Client(s)
Outlook 2000 (sp3)
Windows XP Pro/Home (sp1) non domain member
Result: Authenticates beautifully every time after the VPN connection is
established.

Outlook 2000 (sp3)
Windows 2000 Pro (sp4) non domain member
Result: Sometimes works fine (on different laptops), other times when you
open Outlook after establishing a VPN connection Outlook still asks for
username/password/domain name.

Server
Exchange 5.5 (sp4)
Windows 2000 Server (sp4)

I have seen this problem many times in newsgroups and have posted about it
before but nobody seems to have an answer as to why some machines
authenticate to Exchange fine, while others go horribly wrong. Does anyone
have any ideas on this?

Thanks ahead of time.
