Outlook crashes when attaching jpeg to an email

In MS Outlook 2003 when I attempt to attach a jpeg image from a folder in 'My
Pictures' I get the "Microsoft Outlook has to close" error message dialogue
box.

My workaround is to send the image to the Desktop and attach from there but
this is very inconvenient and a time waster. Grateful for any suggestions.
