i am running winxp pro (at the office, home at home & my laptop) & outlook
2002 (10.3513.3501) sp-1 on my office desktop, laptop and home computer. we
have an exchange server setup to manage the mail.
at work my desktop is configured so i have to login to the exchange server
in order to get my mail. i am not a member of the servers domain, but when
i click on OL i get a dialogue asking for my name, password and domain.
this is true for both my desktop and laptop. at home i just click OL and
somehow it connects without having to do the password stuff (i just did what
they told me
).
anyhow, until last thursday the desktop worked fine, if i clicked outlook a
dialogue would come up asking for my password (it already showed my username
at the top and the domain name at the bottom), i would type it in, and voila
i could get to my mail.
then i did an inplace reinstall of winXP to fix other problems. i kept the
same usernames, etc and just reinstalled over the old winxp and its
registries. i then reinstalled sp1 and the latest xp critical updates and
security fixes.
everything on the desktop seems to be working great now except the email.
when i try to access OL, after putting in my password (it still comes up
knowing my name & domain) it says 'your logon information was incorrect.
check your username and domain, then type your password again. if your
account is new or if your administrator requested a password change you need
to click Change Password then logon with your new password'.
i changed nothing about OL. the same dialogue comes up on the laptop and my
username/password work fine on the laptop but no longer on the desktop.
i tested 'seeing' the exchange server from my laptop and the same problem
exists on it vis-a-vis browsing the drives etc. when i search for the
server, find it, and click on it, then i get the same dialogue that i see
for getting to OL, but when i put the same userinfo/password/domain in it
for this purpose it wont let me on the exchange server.
i tried reaching the exchange server via a remote desktop connection. using
the same username/password this allows me to get to the exchange server
desktop from either my desktop or laptop.
my support guys at the office think something is foobared in the security
because i can no longer even get to the exchange server where before i could
view files, folders etc in addition to getting to my mail.
is a possible winxp or win2k/exchange critical update or security patch
perhaps the problem?
