OUTLOOK.EXE Process

Hi Folks,

I've been noticing something interesting happen lately with my new Office
2007 Ultimate running under Vista Ultimate, and wondering if anyone else has
experienced the same thing.

I installed Office 2007 Ultimate (Disc 1) completely, and then I also
installed Disc 2 (Accounting Express, BCM, and SQL 2005 Express) completely.

What I am noticing now is that my system starts fine, but once I open
outlook to check my emails. OUTLOOK.EXE continues to run in the system
process table and never formally closes.

Is this a feature of the New Office 2007 series to leave outlook open? Or
is is in relations to the BCM that was installed on DISC 2 of the product
that is causing outlook to remain open?

I noticed a post going to a third-party website talking about add-ins. I am
going to check that tongiht when I get home and to the device. But I just
wondered if this was a feature or if anyone knows the root cause to outlook
not formally closing and continuing to consume its memory reserve.

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help with this!

No, it is definitely not a feature. When you close Outlook outlook.exe
should stop as well. On some occassions this could take a while but if it
has still not stopped after 10 minutes. Add-ins and other programs
integrating with or depending on outlook.exe are usually the root cause. For
more info see;

Well I've definately given it over 10 minutes to close up and the reason why
I noticed it is because after that time frame, I kept seeing the corner
messages of new items coming into my mailbox.

Outlook does not show on the taskbar, but only in the Processes tab!

I'll check the add-ins but any other ideas would be appreciated!

And you closed it by using the X in the top right corner? Just to make sure
you didn't minimized it to the Notification Area ;-)

No I definitely closed it using the "X"...

Additionally I went in and selected Exit Outlook and no difference.

Then you'll have to troubleshoot the add-ins. Start with virus scanners, fax
applications and synch applications.

Ok, So I go into the add-ins piece of Outlook 2007 and see items like the
business contact manager, etc.

I have it installed because I may occasionally use it, but I usually leave
the SQL Server on my client off. So thinking that it may be interfering with
this shutdown I try to stop it from being active.

HA HA... Noi such luck, I get an error message that it can not change the
state of the item and it references the LOCAL_MACHINE registry value.

Looks like microsoft protected it so that it can not be removed to
troubleshoot issues like this.

I'd rather not go through the hastle of uninstalling BCM.... There has to
be something else? Would RSS Feeds have anything to do with outlook staying
open?

Locate the following key;
32bit
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\Outlook\Addins

64bit
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Office\Outlook\Addins

Locate the add-in and set its LoadBehavior to 0

Hey there,

Thanks for the feedback but after getting a few hours to play with this
issue this weekend, I think I've figured out the cause.

It wasn't due to any add-ins, but I appreciate the trick on how to change
ones that won't let me disable them through outlook.

It wasn't outlook

The whole cause was due to a Third-Party tool! It was my SetPoint software
from Logitech! Since I own a DiNovo Media Desktop, they have software set to
monitor and display the eMail contents to the media pad's screen.

So when I would go in it would activate and begin to monitor the outlook's
inbox. When I close outlook through the "X", outlook would know this app was
still accessing it and therefore constantly wait for it to end.

The only way to stop the process before I inactivated all of these features
was to reboot. All that I did to resolve it was go into the app, and change
all the sound and eMail checking applicable boxes.

Now when I "X" outlook its process equally ends!

Thank god!

iNexxFear

Ok so I spoke to soon.... It is still occuring, I quickly did a test last
time without sending or recieving messages....

Here's my outlook configuration for accounts:

- POP3 eMail Server
- HTTP (Hotmail) Server
- RSS Feeds Enabled
- BCM using local SQL Small Business Server

Anyone know with the above settings what would cause outlook to be remaining
open? It right now it seems to occur when I send and recieve or have the app
open for a duration... Still thinking it could be that Logitech App, but
need to narrow down all the variables at this point!

If you expect it to be the Logitech App you can always uninstall it (with
Outlook closed) and try without it.
