I need to check something every hour, how can I set up outlook to notify me
on the hour. How is it done?

Go into your calendar and set up a recurring appointment. When you open an
untitled appointment there is a "recurrence" button where you can set your
options.

I don't think Outlook can do that directly. There are many small timer
applications (many of them freeware) that do this and similar things. Look
here for example: http://nonags.com/nonags/remsc.html

In Outlook, you could create a copy of a task (with a daily recurring
pattern) for every hour you want the reminder. But that will clutter your
task folder quite a bit, as you'd have a daily recurring task for 9am, one
for 10am, and so on -- and everyone of them also creates a completed task
per day in your task folder. You also have to open them and mark them as
completed every time (so that the next recurring task gets generated). This
needs three mouse clicks, compared to one click for a normal pop-up timer
notification. May not seem to be much, but if that comes every hour, it
quickly gets annoying (at least it would for me).

There are lots of good and simple "reminder" programs available for your
purpose. As mentioned, any setup in Outlook is going to be cumbersome and
bothersome.

Check out Kirby Alarm And Task Scheduler at Tucows
(http://tucows.rinet.ru/preview/333429.html). This one is freeware and a
nice simple program. There are many others listed on Tucows. To see the
complete Tucows list, from the link page above, click UP the FOLDER list on
'reminders.'
