Outlook - How can I use the address list in the To box?

when I click on the little address book icon next to the To box, an error
sign appears. I just want to type the first letters of a name in my contact
list so that the full email address appears. How can I do this?

What does the error message say?
Is Outlook the default e-mail application for Windows?
In the meantime:

It may not help, but check that WIN.INI in your Windows folder contains at
least

[Mail}
MAPIX=1

and preferably

[Mail]
MAPI=1
CMC=1
CMCDLLNAME=mapi.dll
CMCDLLNAME32=mapi32.dll
