Outlook Permissions

*****Mike Piehl

After installing Norton Internet Security/Anti-Virus, MS
Outlook fails to launch with a message saying that I
don't have the required "Permission" to open the *.pst
file.
Otherwise the Norton installation seems to be working
fine.
Any suggestions for what I need to do to get Outlook
working again?

You might try either deleting or renaming the file called "officeav.dll"
This is a file that Norton puts on the system and has been very well known
to cause issues with Outlook especially. If you are concerned just rename
the .dll to .old and reboot the computer and see if it starts working. If
it still is not working CLOSE Outlook and delete all files named
FRMCACHE.DAT and OUTCMD.DAT and then reopen Outlook. Outlook will
automatically recreate the FRMCACHE.DAT and OUTCMD.DAT files. usually you
will not get a permission error if those .dat files are the issue, Outlook
simply won't open but it will not hurt anything to delete these files and no
reboot is needed. If these fail try creating a new profile with a new PST
and see if Outlook opens. If Outlook opens then just opening your old PST
up in your folder list to see if you get the permission error, if you do get
the same error you may have a damaged PST file. You really need to specify
exactly was version of Outlook you are using and what OS and in your case
what version of Norton.

Marie sure the file still exists and is not marked as "Read only". If it
still exists run scanpst.exe against it and see if it comes up with
anything.

Thanks Norbert and Roady, for your help!

I renamed officeav.dll to officeav.old and rebooted and
that seems to have taken care of it. Is that file's only
purpose to screw-up Outlook?

Thanks for reminding me: Windows XP, Outlook 2002, and
NIS 2004.
