Outlook problems and then some....

OK, here's a sorry tale.....

I was using Outlook 2000 very happily until last week. I have a lot of data
and several PST files that I access from my Oultook Window. This is in
order to keep the PST files below 1.2 Gig and it also helps me because each
PST file relates to a seperate business (I work for several different
businesses).

I started to get memory errors popping up with a reference to the limits on
the paging file. I increased the size of the paging file and defragged the
drive to create more contiguos disk space. That didn't so it so I decided to
take the plunge and upgrade to Outlook 2003. Big Mistake.

I can read the contents of all the PST files and all my accounts migrated
but they just will NOT send and reecive - I simply get a "unknown error"
message coming up when I try to do this. I can still access the Internet
through IE and OE but I can's send or receieve messages through Outlook
2003. I tried creating a new profile - to no avail. I recreated the
accounts - no joy. I even re-installed 2003 - still no joy.

Finally in desperation I stripped out Outlook 2003 and re-installed Outlook
2000. Now hoewever I find I am getting a "Unable to expand the folder. The
set of folders could not be opened. The server is not available. Contact
your administrator if this condition persists." message when I try to expand
many of my PST folders AND I every so often I get an "abnormal termination
error" and Outlook just closes without any notice.

Then when I re-open Outlook it re-indexes taking about 25 minutes to do so.
Futher if I manually close Outlook there remains an instance of Outlook
running in the processes dialog of Task Manager, even though Outlook is
closed. When I shut down, I ALWAYS have to terminate this process before I
can shut down. And on re-starting I have to wait for 25 minutes whilst
Outlook re-indexes......

Can anyone advise why these problems might be occurring and how to get
around them. I would consider going up to 2003 again IF I could solve the
connection/send/receive problem.

Many Thanks

Kelvin
