Outlook running sluggish

I have a windows XP SP2 with Outlook 2003 SP2 running on a P 4 2.66 GHz with
768 mb of RAM and for some reason outlook is running REALLY SLOW. I noticed
this last week.

There's nothing in the event viewer indicating the computer itself is having
any issues, and when I go to task manager and sort by memory usage Outlook is
clearly the memory hog.

I tried looking in the KB for something similar, but all I am finding are
posts from folks that have older computers, which really doesn't apply to me.

I figure if I'm seeing the problem, it's only a matter of time before one of
my users starts complaining about it. The first step is to see if it's a
known issue.

Are you on an Exchange Server? I have seen Outlook running slow if the
connection to the Exchange Server is slow.

If not Exchange Server, do you have a very large, heavily fragmented PST
file? Please give us some details. Also, is this something that started
recently, or has it always been slow?

Yes I'm on an exchange server. I defrag my machine once every week and try
to keep my pst files under 1 gig.

Yes this just started happening recently, last week. I'm also noticing that
whatever I'm doing at the time gets interrupted while I'm receiving emails.
Especially while I'm typing an email.

Hi Penny, For what it is worth I see this problem in most PC in our office.
What we have found that helps is extra memory. If possible try to add about
another gig of memory and compare the differences. Our PCs are new ones with
512 upwards of memory. regards Julian
