Outlook Today - but not as Root Folder (Outlook 2003)

If I've stopped using the Outlook Today overlay for my root folder, is
there still a way to bring it up on my screen?

The reason I don't want it to be my root folder is that when it is my
root folder if I go to contacts, the contacts page is not active until
I click on one of them. In older versions of Outlook, I did not have
this "problem".

Only by making it the folder home page once more.

Your description of the contacts folder display is a new issue to me. What
do you mean by "active"?

Suppose I open outlook and the screen that it opens to is the inbox.
If I then click on my contacts shortcut, the contacts window opens and
the first contact is highlighted. I can then type a letter or letters
and outlook will "jump" to the contact it thinks I'm looking for
(that's what I mean by it being "active").

Contrarily, if I'm looking at the inbox and then click to open Outlook
Today and subsequently click on the contacts shortcut, the first
contact in my list is not highlighted and if I type a letter, nothing
happens; I have to first highlight one of the contacts.

My recollection is that this was not the case with previous versions.

For me, I like using Outlook Today, so not having it available is not
a viable option. However, it seems to me that when any of the folders
is open, it should be "active" in the main window. The same problem
occurs in all folders (tasks, calendar, etc.), after Outlook Today is
opened.

I don't know of any way to change that behavior, which other people have
complained about. It has nothing to do with Outlook Today.

I see that now.... it has to do with the Folder List, which I click on
when I want to see Outlook Today. Thanks for your input, at least I
know that it's not a problem unique to me.
