Page Breaks

Mickey

When we open documents in Word 2004 the page breaks are different (wrong).
These documents were created with earlier versions of Word, and there were
no problems. Even Word X seems to maintain the page breaks as they were.

Also, this problem is different from file to file and from computer to
computer.

Why is that? And how can we fix it so that the page breaks stay the same as
the way they were created.

I have messed around with "print metrics' and different compatibility
settings (WordPerfect 6.X for windows is the closest to getting it right,
but it does not completely correct the breaks).

Some help please.

Hi Mickey,

The way to insure that pages break in the same places from Word version to
Word version is to use the "Keep lines together," "Keep with next" and "Page
Break before" functions. You'll find these options in Format> Paragraph>
Line & Page Breaks. In Word's Help, look up "keep paragraphs together" and
"page breaks." (Do not, by the way, use manually inserted Page Breaks if
you can avoid them; too much can go wrong with them.)

The reason your documents are page-breaking differently in Word 2004 is
probably because a different version of your font is being used. Just
because the font names are the same doesn't mean that the versions are. You
can try installing the earlier version of the font in Word 2004 and
disabling the pre-installed version. That might work.

Hope this helps.

Good Morning Beth (and others)

Thanks for the heads-up but since Word X is using the same fonts that does
not seem to be the problem. I went ahead and replaced all the fonts
(Library>Fonts; Home>Library>Fonts; and Applications>MSOffice
2004>Office>Fonts) with the old fonts from an earlier computer that prints
out all the old reports with the page breaks where they are supposed to be
(turned the computer off and back on), but Word 2004 still does not have the
page breaks in the right place. Seems like something else is going on.

And it seems like way too much work to use "Keep lines together," "Keep
with next" and "Page Break before" on every page of every document that we
write. Besides, that does not help with printing copies of old documents
using Word 2004.

Any other suggestions? (I have downloaded all of the available updates.)
