page numbering in footers

In all of my documents I have choosed to display Page number of Total Pages . On the screen this displays correctly but wheneve I print a hard copy all of the pages come out as Page Number of Page Number (IE: 1 of 1, 2 of 2 etc.) does anyone know what causes this and how to correct it?
