Can anyone tell me what the width of a webpage should be in MS Publisher, if
the page is to be viewed at "medium" text side and with no horizontal scroll
bar.

When I preview my webpages now, they always include horizontal scroll bars.
I just want my page to have a vertical scrollbar, so what should the page
width be?

Thanks

Most monitors are set to 600X800. If you make your web page around 800 pixels (I do
all mine at 750) most everyone will be able to view your page without the horizontal
scroll. This is an example of a 750 pixel page:

That's going to depend on the monitor size. I have a 19" and use IE
to surf. I don't usally have a problem. My mom, on the other hand,
has a 15" monitor and uses AOL's built-in browser. Believe me, with
all of the crap that is built into AOL, there's barely a site that
doesn't require her to scroll.

I think your mother requires a little re-education. Mind you, she'd have to
be in her mid-70s+, so kudos for her for actually using a computer! My
paternal grandfather (89), was given a system about 10 years ago (so you can
figure out the specs!) and it's still in the original packaging! It's never
been out of the box! I've been trying to persuade him for years, but he's
not having any of it. It's the same with my mother's mum - David (Mum's
younger brother) and my cousins have been trying to persuade her to learn
for years (they only live 10 minutes away and see her most days) but she's
not having any of it, either! She's 84.

HEY!! My mom is only 65. She started having children very early in
her life. Too early but I've had the benefit of a young mom.

Mom's happy with AOHell. She's talked about switching to something
less expensive but she does enjoy the occasional chat room so she
says. Mom can be rather stubborn so *I'm* not going to be the one to
talk her into another ISP or a larger monitor. ;-)

You're what? 49? My mother is 56, so your mother is only 9 years older than
mine, yet you're 21 years older than me! 16 is a bit young, I must admit,
though some might say my mother was rather old when she had me (she was 28).
Some of her schoolfriends she's still in touch with have 'children' in their
30s, the oldest of those children is 10 years older than me.

Tell her there are plenty of chatrooms that don't require you to install a
'virus'.

I apologise profusely to your mother for aging her 10 years!

I also use a 19"CRT and my settings are 1024 x 768. My husband's 19"
CRT is set for something goofy. On the rare occasion that I use his
system, it hurts my eyes because the proportions are wacky.

I always run at the highest resolution I can.
I use 14" monitors at 800x600 (although I hate that resolution - it's just
too small), 15" monitors at the highest resolution they'll go to (normally
1024x768), and 17" monitors at 1280x1024 or 1600x1200 (I prefer the latter,
but my eyes start to hurt after a while - most webpages are too small at
that size). I crave screen real estate.

Better watch it - she's tough. I don't cross her. Doesn't matter that
she's 5'2" and weighs 125 on a truly rotten day - she'd still kick
our butts! ;-)

(I'll pass your apologies on to her shortly - she's babysitting me
this afternoon. The dentist, anesthesiologist, and I have a date in
an hour.)

Oooohh!! Sounds painful! And if he wants to get past first base, tell him
he'll have to get past her first!

I have an aunt who just turned 95 and uses the computer every day--mostly
for email. My mother, on the other head, who is also 95, thinks it's only
for geniuses and therefore over her head. There's no persuading her
otherwise. Jeannine
