paste command doesn't work

After Highlighting a phrase or word in Word and then Copying the Highlighted
section, I am unable to Paste the selected area into the document.
Can anyone help with this extremely annoying problem?

What happens when you try? Do you get an error message? What if you choose
Edit - Paste Special? What options are available?
