PC to Mac Compatability

I work with PC powerpoint files that when opened on my Mac (using Office 2004
Powerpoint) regularly have formatting problems (compared to the original).

Is there anyway to prevent these? Is there a third-party utility that could
help me out?

Do you mean text formatting? That could be a font issue. See:

Not text formatting. Usually text blocks resize themselves (they often run
off the page). Footer text blocks seem to become smaller sometimes causing
text to wrap improperly.

That does sound like font substitution. Did you read the info at the link I
provided?
