pdf mystery - pdf file is larger than original and graphics "textu

I have a two page Publisher (2003) document in which I have a graphic (it
appears twice). When I print to .pdf, the graphic becomes "textured". It is a
satin ribbon, but in the .pdf there are white lines through it. One time
instead of lines, it was like a waffle pattern. Why? Also, the Publisher file
is only 795 kb, but when I print to pdf it becomes 1729 kb. Why does the size
more than double?

Thanks for you help!

If the graphic is a gradient or semi-transparent you will get some of the looks
you are seeing. The workaround is to right-click the image, save as a picture,
select the .png format, re-insert.
Are you using Acrobat?

The image was created in Photoshop where I was able to make the background
transparent. I saved it in Photoshop as a .png. So isn't it already saved as
a picture with the .png format? When you say that if the graphic is
semi-transparent...does that mean if it has a transparent background?

When I first tried I was using Acrobat Distiller from Acrobat 5.0. When I
had the problems I thought maybe it was because it was such an old version of
Acrobat. I then tried using CutePdf to print it to .pdf and got the same
result.
