Picture frame box

Hi there,

I've just upgraded to publisher 2007 and i'm having trouble getting to grips
with it, the main problem being the lack of quick and easy way of adjusting
the frame around a picture.

On publisher 2000 i'm sure there was a button you clicked and the frame
shrunk down to the size of the image. The only way i've found of doing this
is on 07 is by manually changing the frame by editing the wrap points.

This is very time consuming when you have a lot of pictures to change.

Oh wise oracle please show me the error of my ways.

Hi John thanks for the reply

When you put a picture into a publisher document you get a rectangular box
around the actual picture with 8 dots on it. In the old publisher you could
click a button and the box would shrink to the actual size of the picture and
not be a rectangle.

I don't want to wrap text around the picture or anything, i would just like
to find an easy way to shrink the frame without manually editting the wrap
points on the frame.

I hope i've explained this a little bit better.

Paul - you don't need to create that frame. Just insert your picture and
skip the frame part. ;-)

If you insert a .wmf picture into your publication, click the dog icon on the
picture toolbar, click *edit wrap points*, it will automatically set the
points. If you then click tight, Publisher will query. Only bitmaps do you have
to manually set the wrap points.

Interesting...when I insert a picture
into a Publisher document I go to...

Insert / Picture / From File...

I don't see a frame...all I see is the
picture. There are 8 dots...(handles)
that can be used to resize the image.
But I wouldn't call it a frame. And of
course you can reposition the picture
by dragging the 4 way arrow or nudge
it with the arrow keys.

Are you referring to a picture of an
irregular shape like a cutout and the
unwanted background is white?

Hi again John,

I'm probably not using the correct terms here but i think John is getting
the closest to what i'm trying to mean. I can get an image into publisher but
the image is an irregular shape, for example a bike saddle. When i put this
image into publisher it isn't the shape of the saddle, it's the saddle
surrounded by a rectangular box. What i'm trying to do is to make this
rectangular box the same shape as the image i'm inserting into the document.

On old publisher there used to be an icon which you clicked that did this
automatically now the only way to get close to this is by manually changing
the edit points.

I tried clicking the dog and then clicking tight which i had hoped would
work but the only thing that happened was the box turned red.

I'm sorry i can't explain myself better.

Thanks for your reply. The pictures i'm inserting are .jpg's but i renamed
one as a .wmf to try your suggestion. When i did it the box turned red,
publisher then queried it, i replied yes and then nothing else happened.

I have tried making myself a bit clearer on a reply to John but i still
don't think i'll find an answer. The picture is an irregular shape but it is
always surrounded by a rectangular shape. I know how to resize and how to
move the image around and how to crop the box so it's not as big around the
irregular shape but i want the box to just be the shape of the irregular
image.

I know it doesn't sound very clear what i'm trying to do but with lots of
images on a page sometimes these boxes overlap each other and the actual
picture is hidden slightly by a box.

Would it just be better to use the "bring to front" option or "bring to
back" via right clicking and then order.

You could draw an irregular shape with the freeform tool in autoshapes. While
the shape is selected, fill, fill effects, picture tab, browse to your picture.
You may need to check the *Lock picture aspect ratio.*

Bitmaps (.jpg, png etc.) can be turned into irregular shapes, When you select
edit points, you can create new points by placing the cursor anywhere on the
picture. You don't need to change the picture to .wmf. If you right-click the
point, you can change it into a curve to soften the look.

Maybe we are getting closer.

If you are simply saying you don't wish to
see the dotted line around your picture...
go to...View / Boundaries and Guides...and
uncheck it....or type...Ctrl+Shift+O.

Or...are you referring to an unwanted white
background that surrounds the irregular
shape? If that is the case...select the picture
and look at your Picture Toolbar...there is
a button that says "Set Transparent Color".
If the button is Live...click it and then click
the background of your picture.

I'm going to try one more time, i'm so grateful for your help and sorry for
bothering you, it would be so easy if i could just show you but i can't. This
paragraph below was what i was meaning.

In 2000 you can insert the picture without a frame. There is a picture frame

If there isn't a button to do this i will have to use the bring to front /
bring to back button instead. (I'm putting multiple images on a page and
sometimes the white box of 1 image obscures some part or another image)

handy for me and i really miss it.

All images are square or rectangular, there's no such thing as an "irregular
shape" image. It may appear irregular because you have transparency (but not
in a jpg), but they are still square/rectangular.

Paul, It is the dog icon on the picture toolbar. It is the same as what you are
use to in 2000. It is simply presented differently. If the picture toolbar is
not open, right-click the format toolbar, check the picture toolbar. Drag it to
the bottom of the work area.

Did you ever create a new drawing in Publisher 2000? All the picture tools were
available when you inserted a picture into the canvas, in 2007 this step is
automatic.
