picture not visible

I am unable to view pictures in any view apart from Print
Preview and Reading layout. A blank frame is shown where
the object should be.

Right-clicking the frame doesn't allow me to edit the
properties of the picture - it's disabled. But in Reading
layout I can get to the Format Picture dialog box.

I think it may be something in my user profile as on the
same machine, same document using a different login, the
Format Picture dialog box can be brought up in Normal View
and Page Layout View.

Question: Is it something in the user profile? How can I
change what ever setting is affected so I can see the
picture?

Thanks in advance.

I've found the profile option that is responsible: Tools,
Options, View, Picture Placeholders. Somewhere, somehow,
at some stage I must have turned this on. Turning it off
made the pictures visible - and enabled the format picture
option.

You didn't necessarily make this change yourself. Word will often enable
picture placeholders on its own when the graphics load becomes so oppressive
that working on a document would be too sluggish.
