Picture on Desktop Stretch- OK Tile-Center- Won't Show

Using XP Home and have no networks. I had a problem with my Microsoft Office
2003 after downloading updates and had to reinstall it. After
reinstallation, I had other problems which I resolved by using on-line FAQ.
I cannot solve the following one:

I can place any picture on my desktop (Save To Desktop). However, it always
appears in the STRETCH mode. I can no longer adjust the screen by right
clicking the screen, left clicking Desktop and adjusting the Position (TILE -
CENTER. It produces only a blank white screen.

I played with Color Adjustments thinking I was blotting out the TILE and
CENTER settings but that did not fix anything.

Help please. Microsoft tellm me they never heard of this problem before.

your specific operating system. It's not an Office issue.
