Pictures with Insert and Link do not update

To add graphics to my Word documents, I use Insert and Link. This used to let
me update images AND save them in the file so when they went people who did
not have the original graphics, the images could still be seen.

This does not seem to work any more since I upgraded to Office XP. F9,
Update Fields on Open, and Update Now in the Edit Links boxes do not update
the image. I can find no help on this feature.

It should be working just the same, except
- if the IncludePicture fields have been locked (Ctrl+F11)
- the new security updates have been installed and updating was suppressed
