Pictures

I have several documents in Publisher and all with different pictures, jpeg
and gifs, etc. About 2 months ago, I noticed that when I open the publisher
files to update them, I am unable to view and pics in any of the formats.
Some of the pics have a wmf extension and I have no idea how because these we
once all mostly jpeg. I have looked everywhere to see how to view the pics
and can't find anthing. How did this happen and where did the wmf extension
come from?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
