Placing text in columns

The columns won't be balanced unless the multi-column section ends in a
Continuous section break (which of course is required if you have
single-column text following). Even with the break, you can enable the
Compatibility Option "Don't balance columns for Continuous section starts."

I am typing text into a two-column format. As I add text, Word (Office
2000) balances the columns for me. I would like to turn this feature off so
that I can fill up one column at a time, but I can't remember where this
control feature is located!

Thanks for any assistance.

Greetings from Texas!

I have various continuous section breaks in (and after) the text already. I
am not familiar with the "compatibility option," however. I know that in
the past when I have had uneven columns of text on the last page that I have
selected some option to balance the columns (or did I use forced column
breaks...?).
