pop3 server information

Steven Anderson

Hi
I have 4 e-mail accounts set up in outlook, whenever i
start up outlook the POP3 server that i entered has
changed to "localhost" on 3 of the accounts (it doesnt
happen on the default account). how can i stop this
happening as it is very annoying having to re-enter the
server name everytime i start up?

Thanks

Steve

You have a personal firewall or antivirus product installed that can protect
e-mail. You need to disable that feature for you account settings to stick.

You have anti-virus software that runs as a proxy and needs to insert
itself inline with your e-mail traffic. That's why it changes the mail
server settings in the e-mail account. It runs as a local proxy and
since it is local then it uses "localhost" (which should have an IP
address of 127.0.0.1 assigned in your hosts file). Norton AntiVirus
2001 and earlier used to do this but NAV 2002 and later run as a
transparent proxy and no longer change these settings. I think McAfee
still runs as an inline proxy and so it will change the settings.

Note that you did not actually report a problem. If your e-mail is
receiving and sending okay, then it doesn't matter that the anti-virus
program modified those settings.
