When I open PP 2003, I hate everything there. I just want a beginning slide
with no next boxes. How do I create a template so that when I start PP 2003
all that appears is the first slide and nothing else?

If you set up your own template and include one slide with the blank slide
layout, save it, close PowerPoint, open PowerPoint and select the your template
and click on "Use for all new presentations", then you'll always get a blank
slide with a blank layout whenever you open PowerPoint.
