powerpoint 2003 using network shared drive

Ah help I am having problems with PPT. On network shared drives without the
modify permission it seems to not let you save correctly. I am using Windows
XP with a 2003 server. I get the error that the file already exists even if
it doesn't then I can't modify it so will not let me save.
Anyone know of a setting in PPT that could affect this
