PowerPoint 2007 Charts Lose Formatting When Edited

I'm struggling with a complex document for which my client wants a simple
answer. They have numerous very small, extremely simple charts that they want
to update quickly, smoothly, easily. I discouraged an Excel link because the
edits are being made by many people within and outside of the client's
network; instead, I created and formatted very simple PowerPoint charts that
*should* be editable by just pasting new Excel data into the existing charts'
cells. But when my client tries to do that, the formatting reverts to some
default setting that I can't find or override (I do not have this issue when
I do it myself). To add further fuel to the fire, some folks are on PCs and
some are on Macs. All are on either Office 2007 (PC) or 2008 (Mac). Is there
an easier, faster way to make data changes smooth and easy for multiple users?
