PowerPoint converting metafile - red X (workaround?)

I'm having an issue with a PPT file with graphics from a coworker on a
PC.

The following always results in red X's:
1. Open the file from a PC with images
2. Immediately save the file (PowerPoint displays "Converting:
Metafile" for each image)
3. SAVE AGAIN
(Note: Images still appear in slides at this point)
4. Close the file (I don't need to quit)
5. Re-open file

I now have red X's for each Metafile.

BUT, the following steps seem to result in the images being saved
correctly:
1. Open the file from a PC with images
2. Step through the pages one at a time
(getting the "Converting metafile" on each page with graphics)
3. Save the document
From then on all the images seem to work OK. It's as if the automatic
batch conversion in combination with the second save corrupts the
images in the document.

I'm running PowerPoint 2004 version 11.3.5 (070411) on Mac OS 10.4.9
(MacBook Pro)
I don't know which version of PC PowerPoint was used.

Mike,

Thanks for reporting this . Would you mind if I kindly ask Steve Rindsberg
(the pptfaq maker) to add your findings to the powerpoint faq pages?

I would not mind!
