Did you install the updates to Office 2003, including Service Pack 1? If
not, you need to do that. For detailed instructions, see this entry from
Steve Rindsberg's PPT FAQ:

kathy, this has not worked! i have backed up all my work from word, excel,
etc on to disc, and believe that i now have to uninstall and re-install
office. please correct me if i am wrong?

Kathy J

What hasn't worked? The update? or something else? What EXACTLY happens?
(Step by step, please - I can't see from here :) )

Can you step back and tell me what you tried and what is happening? I am (at
this point) not even sure if you mean that the updates won't work (won't
install or download or some such) or that the updates and other suggestions
from the FAQ were able to be done, but your original problem is still there.
No matter which it is, can you describe it in detail and tell us exactly
which error messages you are getting?

What Kathy said re more information.

However, I'll add that instead of uninstalling and reinstalling, I'd go to
the Help menu and run a Detect and Repair. You can also run Detect and
Repair from Windows Control Panel (Add/Remove programs).

Very sorry, Kathy and Echo S. Firstly, I downloaded updates required
including sp1 update, which then informed me it had already been installed. I
then went to your suggested site for more info, which told me about detect
and repair. I tried it from the Help menu, and also from the control panel.
Both times the error report came up with the folowing: msiexec.exe. Event
type: In Page Error P1:C0000009c and P2:00000003. Also, C:
document/debbie/locals/temp/WER1817.dir00 and
C:document/debbie/locals/temp/WER1817.dir00/appcompat.txt. I hope this has
been more helpful for you.

If SP-1 has already been applied to Office 2003, then there's no reason to
reapply it.

Rather than trying to uninstall/run Detect and Repair, etc., what happens if
you search for *.PCB files on your computer and delete those? (This is the
PPT toolbar. It will recreate itself when PPT starts.)

I'm thinking, though, that if you want to do the uninstall/reinstall, you
may want to call MS Product Support (or support for your computer, whichever
applies in this situation), as this sounds like a more complicated situation
than usual. The Office MSI Installers can be kind of confusing.

Thanks, Echo. I searched for *.PCB and found 2 files, deleted and tried to
view some PP slides. Error report came up which would include files:
C:/Documents/Debbie/Locals/Temp/1013136.cvr. Why is it that word, excel and
outlook all work fine, and not PP. All I wish to do is view slides, I don't
even know how to create slideshows yet. Very frustrating!!!

Hm. Your default printer isn't a fax, is it? CVR is a fax cover. It's an odd
file type to get in a PPT error message.

Can you find the appcompat.txt file you mentioned?
(C:document/debbie/locals/temp/WER1817.dir00/appcompat.txt) I'm wondering if
it might give us a clue.

Since deleting *.PCB didn't work, maybe try closing PPT and renaming *.PPA
files to *.PPO. If PPT works after taht, then you can rename the PPO files
back to PPA one at a time until you isolate the problem.

This error comes from the MS Installer. For some reason it is trying to
install a needed component in order to fire PowerPoint. I suspect as others
have pointed out, that it's searching for an installed printer and when not
finding one is falling back to the fax which is a faux printer. Try
installing a generic printer driver and see if that solves the problem.

hi echo, austin and kathy j, you are not going to believe this!!! Echo, I
tried searching for the file, - no go. And no, I do not have a fax. So, I
went looking for a printer driver to install. This is downloading and
installing as we speak. In the meantime I got the shits and uninstalled
powerpoint only, then reinstalled it. And there you go- slideshows galore!!!
I sincerely thank you for all your help and perseverance. Without you I
surely would have gone mad. Have a great day, every day
