*.ppt files do not open in powerpoint 2000

When I double click on a presentation file in Windows
explorer the Powerpoint program launches - to a "blank"
ppt.
I have to run the file from within powerpoint ie go file,
open etc
Can anyone suggest what may be going wrong here?
