Preventing data loss when re-protecting my form

When I unprotect my form then re-protect it I am losing my data. "Help" says
that Word preserves the data but it is not preserving in my forms. Does
anyone know how to prevent this data loss?

In current versions of Word, the data is not reset if you use the padlock
button on the Forms toolbar but is if you use the Tools menu route.
