Preview Pane

Under the options of the preview pane you can uncheck the
mark items as read. When I uncheck this , does it
actually stop the email from being opened so I can view
the contents of the email and not worry about a Virus on
the email if I do not double click or does it actually
open but does not mark it as opened.

In some instances, all that is required is that you preview the mail.
However, if you have applied all Outlook and IE patches, then you should be
okay.

If you are still worried, you can get Chilton Preview Pane (search
google.com) that will render all mail as plain text in the preview pane.
