preview unavailable

when I try to open a file in slide sorter mode it is
extremely slow and reads preview unavailable...what is
happening and how could I correct this?

As far as the file opening slowly, what is the file size? Are there any
linked files? As far as the Preview, click "File", "Properties", and see if
the "Save preview picture" is checked.
