previously registered XP

I am in the market for a copy of office xp and am looking for a bargain on
eBay. I am occasionally seeing previously registered copies available
there. Exactly what would it take to transfer ownership of such a copy to a
new owner? How would the product activation work?

If they are legit, they've uninstalled it from their computer. You install
it on your computer, select the telephone option for activation, and explain
the situation.

It MUST be a full retail version not OEM.
You would need the original disk, product code, certificuit.... Basically
EVERYTHING the original owner received; even then there's no guarantee

Thanks for your help. Assumiing I decide to purchase a used copy, I will get
the seller's assertion that he has given up all copies of the software and
that it is a full retail version.

Look for the code. An OEM uses a 20 digit number and "OEM" are three of
them. (Or at least they used to.)
