Problem generating labels

I recently purchased a new computer running Windows XP and Word 2002. When I open up a blank document, the page size defaults to 8.5" by 11", as expected. When I create full page of labels using the labels wizard (standard way of creating labels) and I select "New Document", the labels appear on a custom size document. The page size got reset automatically, and I can't figure out how to make it so that it doesn't change the page size. Has anyone ever seen this before?

What label type did you choose - one from the Avery Standard list for which
the paper size is specified as letter 8.5 x 11 under the Label Options
dialog?
