Problem Installing from CDs

C

Chris08

I keep getting error messages when I try to install
Office 2000 from my cd-roms. The errors say that there is
a problem with WINWORD8 on the cd. I had a computer with
Windows 98SE and I have never had a problem installing
Office before. Recently I have purchased a computer with
Windows XP and this is where I get all the error
messages. When I look at Microsofts websites I see that
there is an Office 2000 and an Office XP. Does this mean
that because mine is Office 2000 that I can not install
it on my XP computer? I am so confused. I have found some
articles in the Knowledge Base section, articles 824993
and 824938. However, I have no idea if either apply to my
problem. Can anybody help?
Thanks
Chris

Chris08,
You do not specify the error messages.
Office 2000 will run very well on XP.
If you are getting specific errors, please post them. Also try cleaning your cd's before you install.

The error message I get says: "Unable to read
WINWORD8.DOC. Make sure file exists and you can open it."
I have gone to this file on the CD-ROM but I am unable to
open it. I get another error message that just says,
unable to open. I went back to my old laptop that has
Windows 98SE and tried installing Office 2000 and it
worked perfectly. That error message never came up. The
laptop I am using now is an HP Pavilion with XP and Corel
installed on the system disks. I even reinstalled the
whole operating system again but that didnt help. Any
ideas why it won't let me install Office 2000?
Thanks
Chris

Chris08,
I suspect that there is a hardware conflict on your HP machine, or possibly an update to Windows XP. When you reinstalled your OS, did you update first then install Office?
Our procedure on clean installs:
OS install / fresh format of drive
Install Office / or all software to drive
Update OS to first SP / update software to first SP
Update to 2nd SP if applicable
Hope this helps, if not you may want to repost and someone else may be able to help. The error message does not return any results on the Microsoft Knowledge Base.
