Problem opening documents in Word 2000

I recently installed a copy of Word 2000 on a new Windows XP laptop using the
original cdrom disc. Word opens ok but the title bar starts to alternately
blink from dim to normal every time an attempt is made to open a document ...
and the program locks up.

The only way I've founds to get around the problem is to open the Windows Xp
Task window and select the "Switch To" button which then displays a normal
open file dialog box. Word then operates normally until the next time is
opened when the same problem occurs.

I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling word with no help. Does anyone
have a suggest about how to cure this problem?

Thanks for the ms support tip. This allowed me to disable the MS Word
portion of Norton's Anti-Virus software which was causing the problem. I
appreciate the help.
