Problem sending with multiple email accounts

H

H Lee

Thanks for the reply. I should have been more specific: I have mutiple
email addresses forwarding to one POP3 account. When I hit reply, it replies
with my default email address instead of the email address to which the
original was sent.

For each email address I have created an email account in Outlook. These
are only for sending purposes. When I receive email, I only check through my
default account.

Is there a way for Outlook to know which email address an email is sent to
and to reply using that address?

No. Outlook bases the From address of replies only on the address
associated with the account on which the message was received. You can
always change the account on which a message will be sent using the
"Account" dropdown on the message, but there's no way to get Outlook to do
what you're asking.

Hello everybody! Maybe I got something different, but anyway here is my
problem:
I have Outlook 2003 SP1 and two different e-mail accounts in it. I need to
forward about 100 e-mails (which recieve on first account) everyday to
another user, using another account automaticly (like a rule for the mail).

Any help is appreciated.

Has this problem been fixed yet? It's causing me much grief:

I use about 5 different email addresses, different domains and different
mail servers and through different ISPs because I'm using a notebook. I
directly reply (or specify which account to send from) but the mail is
subsequently sent though my default account - or in some cases through my
hotmail account. There is no notice that outlook is doing this. It just does
it. Doesn't ask for permission to send from alternative account or anything.
It's extremely troublesome.

For example, I am in college and subscirbe to a listserv through my student
email account. When I post to the listserv, I specify that the email is sent
through my student email account. But then the mail is actually sent though
my default account, which is NOT my student account, rather, it's my personal
email account. And so, since the personal account is not recognized, the post
is rejected and I have to start over.
Same thing happens with work accounts, etc.

I'm gettinng to the point where I'm considering setting up seperate
identities in outlook instead of using the multiple accounts features. It's
drivinng me absolutely nuts! Everything worked in the last version of
Outlook! argh.

so, news?

Make sure that you're properly authenticating to your outgoing servers in
all your accounts. This only happens in the case in which you would not
have been able to send through that account anyway - in other words, a fix
would mean that you would get a non-delivery report for the message.

Is there any update on a fix for this bug? I seem to run into this problem
frequently with sending read receipts.

Are you properly authenticating to all your outgoing servers? If you're
hitting this problem, the message would not be sent even with the fix,
because the server through which you're trying to send the message is
rejecting it.

Thanks Jeff, but this won't solve the problem. Here is more detail about my
situation and I'm guessing there are a few people in my same situation.

I have multiple incoming mail servers and all incoming mail works fine. My
outgoing mail servers are all set to my home ISP (smpt.west.cox.net) and when
I am at home my email all works fine. It sends out through the correct
accounts.

I would set up the accounts to send out through each mail server for each
account, however, my ISP (Co) will not allow becuase they try to reduce spam
(no email relaying).

Therefore, when I am on a network that does not use Cox, the Outlook problem
happens and my outgoing mail is sent through whichever server is available
(usually Hotmail).

I like Outlook as well as Cox, and I'd prefer to keep using both, but if
this problem isn't fixed I may have to change something drastically. Any
suggestions for at leeast a work around?

Cheers,
Elaine

Jeff,

Please do not 'fix' this 'bug'! In previous versions of outlook it ha
automatically chosen another account if it fails to send on th
default, and this is a GOOD FEATURE! Outlook 2003 changed thi
originally (KB 834866). I haven't tried SP1 yet, but if it doe
automatically try another account now, then all I can say is "GREAT!!!
Picture this scenario: We have an exchange server, and POP3 externa
accounts. The user wants to send to a mixture of internal and externa
recipients, but can only select on account to send from, so the othe
recipients do not receive their email (unless you set up a routin
service on your exchange server, maybe?). I understand that some peopl
do want to restrict sending from a particular account - but if this i
required by some, and automatic attempts to send on other accounts i
required by others, then surely the 'fix' is that you have an option t
turn the feature on or off!!!

Update.

I had a similar problem in OL2003 : I have two email accounts and I wanted
to send email through one of them but every time I sent an email it seemed to
be sent from the default email address. Even if I tried swapping which
account was the default account it still seemed to get sent from the same
email address.

I seem to have solved this problem by changing the send options when sending
an email.

create a new email,
select the account from which you want the email sent
click on Options
set the "have replies sent to" field to whatever address you want

then after that it seemed to work.

This may well have something to do with the default signatures

I have two yahoo email addresses with the same login and can't change the
login details. They will always be the same. So I clicked on 'send/receive
settings' and changed my secondary email so that it did not receive emails.
Because the emails are from the same login I still get emails to my secondary
address, even technically I shouldn't by Outlook. This way my primary email
pulls all emails from both email addresses and I can use it as default for
replying. Doesn't completely solve the problem but at least my primary email
is default for replying when it should always be that way! :)

I too am having the same problem.

How do I set up authentication to the outgoing server? Right now, I have
checked the "... requires authentication" box and selected the option "use
same settings as incoming mail server". Should I do something else?
