Problem when opening Word

Windows XP pro SP2
Word 2002

Whenever I ry try to open word it takes a couple of
minutes until it is operational. This tends to freeze the
whole machine.

My sutuation is that Word would eventually opens after a
few minutes during which it freezes everything.
