Problem with custom fields in MSP 2007 (Beta)

M

Mark Edmonds

Here's my problem:

1. I open Tools->Customize->Fields
2. I redefine Text1 as "my custom field" then click OK
3. I then copy this custom field to the global.mpt file (for use on other
projects)
4. Exit project

5. I then re-open project (new file), insert Text1 and it does not display
"my custom field".

Though I can see "my custom field" in the global, it's not being picked up
by project.

Has anyone experienced the same problem and found a way around it? Is this a
bug?

Any help appreciated,

R

Hi,

I tried this on Project Professional 2007 and couldn't reproduce the error.
You renamed Text1 in Customize Fields, then copied it to the Global using
Organizer, then when you exited Project you said yes if you were asked if
it's OK to over-write the Global.Mpt file?

I did this and inserting a new column, My Field did appear in the field list
and as the new column title.

Yes - exactly. However, it didn't ask me to overwrite the global.mpt file,
but I know it saved it since when I re-open project, I can see it in the
global.

I'm going to reinstall 2007 and try again. This is strange.

Rod - my colleagues reproduced my exact problem. Could I ask you:

1. What version of MSP2007 do you have installed
2. You sure you weren't using MSP2003 by accident (?!!)

Many thanks,

Mark

I'm using 2007 Beta on a Virtual PC image of Beta 2 provided to me by
Microsoft. Build 12.0.4017.1004

Hi Rod & Mark

Pardon me for chiming in. I can also reproduce the same problem. The
Text1 field is not retaining the renamed title "My Custom Field"
although it does retain the formula entered.

I am using the same build as Rod (12.0.4014.1004) also running on
Windows XP in Virtual PC environment.

I also can reproduce Julie's scenario using build 12.0.4017.1003
Looks like we have a bug.

Glad I'm not the only one! Does anyone know if there's anyway I can report
this to Microsoft or how I can find out if they are aware of the problem?

Thanks Julie - appreciated.

P.S. Just about to post another bug (when activities are set to fixed
duration).

Julie - I tried accessing the site you suggested, but I just can't find a way
to submit feedback.

Any ideas?

Hi Mark,

In order to log "bugs" on the connect site:
http://connect.microsoft.com/feedback/default.aspx?SiteID=235

you need to have at passport ID or "live" id. (I believe it can be the same
ID as you use to post to this newsgroup - assuming you are posting through
the web.)

At the top of the page, upper right corner there is a Sign In. Once you
sign-in, the page should re-paint with a Submit Feedback hyperlink at the top
of the page.

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

Hi Mark,

You're welcome and thanks for your diligence on the bug report.

No, I don't work for Microsoft. I am a Microsoft Project MVP (Most
Valuable Professional) and have worked with MS Project for about 15
years, but no other "official" affiliation.

Just curious, why do you ask :)

Hi Julie,

Because you're very active and seemed to know a lot! By the way, I found
another wacky bug. Create 3 activities, 10 day durations, finish-to-start.
Important: make them all fixed duration. Now change the first activity to 5
days then the second activity to 3 days. See how teh second activity goes to
0 days rather than 3 days!

Yes - filing this one too.

Hello again!

I tried this evening, logged in but there's no "Submit Feedback" link. All I
can think of is that they're not allowing any more participants. And yes, I'm
using IE!

I'm finding some horrible stuff that I don't believe anyone has not reported
yet. We're a small management consultancy and depend on MSP so want to make
sure we get this fixed!

Thanks for the kind words Mark. Thanks again for filing the bug
reports. I see from your earlier posts that you found the way in to the
feedback page.
