Problems after pasting tasks from other projects

It appears that problems (file corruptions?) start
happening after a PM checks out a project from the server,
selects and copies tasks from another local project,
pastes the tasks into the checked out project and then
saves the project back to the server. After saving it,
I've seen the server come back with "can't open file"
and "can't save file" error messages, meaningless circular
reference errors, extremely long (2 min) recalculation
times, missing tasks, screwed up predescessors and the
like. Incidently, I checked if Microsoft has a Project
file repair utility, and they don't. Any advice?

You cannot copy and paste tasks from one file to
another. Since it is a database all tasks have unique
ID's and when you copy and paste from another file you
most likely made duplicate entries for a primary key
which would cause most database applications to fail.

Delete the file from the database through the Admin on
PWA and then fix the complete file offline and import
into Project Server when you are ready. This should help.

You must certainly can copy and paste tasks between project plans, or at
least you should be able to. I wonder if this is related to the problem
described in:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;329665

You should have a look at this article, although your symptoms sound
slightly different. It may offer some insight, if not, you might consider a
support incident with Microsoft.
