Problems finding "Remove Office v. X Test Drive"

Hi,

I've got a new iBook and I want to re-install Office :Mac from the
software CD I purchased in 2003. Much to my dismay, when I installed
from the CD, I got a message saying I had the test drive version, which
was good for 30 days.

So I went to the Mactopia Web site, where I found the special bulletin
about how to remove the Office v. X Test Drive. The bulletin says (Step
#3), "In the Finder, click Applications, double-click the Microsoft
Office X folder, and then double-click the Remove Test Drive icon.
Click Remove."

I've also looked at e-mails on the Usenet site but I don't see the
specific problem I'm having, which is this: I don't get an Office X
folder, and so I don't get a Remove Test Drive icon, either.

When I open Applications, all I have is a folder entitled "Office 2004
for Mac Test Drive." Within it are 10 items, including MS Word, Excel,
Powerpoint and Entourage, and a folder named "Remove Office". But never
anything about removing "Test Drive."

What should I do?

Thank you,
Willow Blue

Hi,
when you bought your iBook, it came with a test drive of Office 2004, not
v.X. If you want to get rid of the Test Drive because you already have
Office and/or are not interested in testing the latest version, then use the
Remove Office tool which you can find in the Remove Office folder you
described. The uninstaller you were trying to use was the v.X one, and this
one can't remove Office 2004 Test Drive since there was no Office 2004
(obviously) when v.X was released in 2002.

So, what you have to do is the following: run the Remove Office tool and
uninstall Office 2004 Test Drive. If I were you, I'd remove every version of
Office, even v.X which you installed, just to avoid any potential problems
in the future. After removing the office suites, there should be no trace
left of the Test Drive, and you can then install Office v.X. And don't
forget to get the latest free update (10.1.6) from the Mactopia website for
a better performance.

Hope this was helpful,
Michel

Hi Michel,
Thanks again for your advice. I've just done as you suggested, removing
every version of Office X. I then opened my Applications folder to see
if the "Office 2004 for Mac Test Drive" folder had disappeared, but it
was still there.

I closed the Applications window and re-opened it as suggested in the
Mactopia special bulletin, but the folder refuses to disappear. What
should I do?

And to install my v.X from my original software CD, shall I just drag
the CD to the hard drive and install each program one by one? That's
what the CD says to do (unless I want to do a Custom Install), but I'm
wary . . .

Hello again,
the Remove Office tool will remove the files Office places in your system
folders and libraries, so it's normal to see the Test Drive in the
Applications folder even after running the uninstaller (that's at least what
experience has taught me). Just drag the Test Drive folder into the trash
and empty it.

As for installing Office v.X, it all depends on what your needs are going to
be. You can drag the folder from the CD onto the hard disk, this will be a
standard installation. I prefer using the installer, as it allows me to
configure what components are going to be installed. But if the standard
configuration is fine for you, then the drag and drop installation will do.

If you have any further questions, post back.

Michel,

Thanks -- I did use the installer for Office v.X and all is well.
Dragging the Test Drive folder to the trash and emptying it did, at
last, make Test Drive -- and its accompanying notices -- history.

Thanks again for your help,
