Problems in Project

I have created a project that has sub-tasks durations that roll up to
summary-tasks. The summary-tasks durations that roll up to a project total.
Everything is linked and is all totaling up correctly. I have resources that
I want to apply to tasks but everytime I do that the total duration time of
the project goes up as well as the completion date goes farther and farther
out as I add resources. I expected it to do the opposite and get shorter. The
tasks are all fixed work tasks. Any suggestions as to what i am doing wrong
or how I can get this to work right?

Hi Trevor,

Thanks for your input. I did check the auto-leveling and it is set to
manual. Just a little update, this is multiple projects sharing a resource
pool. Any other suggestions or any idea where I could get some help.

Thanks
Terry

TerryW,
I guess misery loves company. I am experiencing the same problem but you've
stated the problem much more succinctly than I.

Hi Terry,

Welcome to this Microsoft Project newsgroup :)

Initial assignment of a resource adopts the work hours dictated by the
calendar in use and the duration of the task. If you subsequently change
the
allocation, effort driven settings will come into effect which could cause
changes to durations. You might like to have a look at my
series on Microsoft Project in the TechTrax ezine, particularly #10 on
multiple resource assignments, at this site: http://tinyurl.com/2xbhc or

(Perhaps you'd care to rate the article before leaving the site, :)
Thanks.)

Hope this helps - please let us know how you get on :)

Hi Mike,

Great information and article! Thanks for your input and information. I
did the exercise in the article and have a good understanding of how things
work. Unfortunitly, when I apply that same logic to my project, my original
problem still exsists. Any other suggestions?

Thanks
Terry

I'm clutching at straws! Are you sure that you haven't assigned resources
to any summaries? Try applying the summaries filter and check through the
column for the Resources field.

Hi Mike,

I did apply the filters showing only the summaries and there was no
resources attached to any summaries. I know that this is asking a lot, but
is there any way that you might be willing to take a look at a scaled down
version of the project, add a few resources to a few tasks from the resource
that are entered and then maybe you might be able to tell me what is
happening and why the summary and task durations are going up instead of down
and what I might do to fix it. I would be extremely appreciative and would
be willing to pay for the help.

Thanks
Terry
